NYT Games: Word Games & Sudoku App Reviews

I love the crosswords but the ads on the free daily puzzles are completely obnoxious and it hijacks my audio output. I want to listen to MY music, not whatever the apps think I should listen to. Remove the audio hijacking and tone down the obnoxious ads and Ill improve my rating.

Absolutely love it!

They say it in the description. They offered a mini puzzle and then directed me to a bunch of subscription info. I should have read more carefully, but beware. This is a free app for current NYT subscribers only. The free mini puzzle wasnt even fun.

I do the puzzle every day and the recent improvements have been great

After the latest update, only a few years of puzzles are now available in the archive. They used to go back to 1995! Whats up, NYT?

You have to subscribe just to play?!

I like the app, I do the crossword in the dark at bedtime. Even at the lowest screen brightness setting, it is too bright. I wish I could invert the color of the text & background, like in the Kindle app, making it display white letters on a black background, greatly reducing screen brightness. Thanks!

Fewer features and more than double the price for a subscription after the "update" and publisher switch -- whats not to hate? Update: Ah, right. Ads. Fortunately theyve recently added those too, and shrunk the catalog of puzzles to boot. If you want NYY crosswords, pick up one of their many books and save yourself $30+. This app is a ripoff.

The one app I play every day. I love the daily mini.

I downloaded the app thinking it was free. It isnt. It is a free 7 day trial. Hey NYT, NOT NICE TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL DUPED!

Great app - but it will be so much better with an Apple Pencil. Please add support for stylus input!

Please add Apple Pencil support so I can write in my answers just like your version of this app for Microsoft Surface Pro. Then I will give this 5 stars. :)

Great app, but one small annoying piece to it. The "back" button is a blue "v" pointing down. Everybody knows thats the human interface guideline symbol for a drop-down menu. NY Times Crossword programmers, the symbol for going back to the start page should be a blue "<" pointing to the left.

Love the app, but its blown up and blurry on the iPad Pro. Its been out for 6 months!

The mini puzzles are my favorite way to kill time on the subway ride to and from work. I love it! Would give five stars except the stats board is inaccurate for me. Id love to be able to look back on how my times have improved over the last year and I dont seem to have the option. Awesome app though, NYT.

Got a mssg. that my subscription expired, logged into i tunes to renew, thought I did so for 1 yr, got message I bought the intro pack which expires 4/22 (12 days) Cant find out what I bought nor how to cancel in the app. Called NY Times, got a robo helper- couldnt find my account but theres no live help on Sun so was advised to go online. FRUS- TRATING! What the hell, NYT. The app needs a function to check & correct wrong subscriptions? Not acceptable NYT for $40 for access to your x-words!

Playing music? If you use this app you wont be. Overall the app works well, but I would like to still hear music/podcasts when I open the app. Its annoying.

The clue was "cutting tool edge" and the answer "bezel." A bezel is the cover to your watch. "Bevel" is s blade edge. And since when do geese form skeins? Shouldnt it be sheep? The puzzles reuse the same clues. Sometimes on successive days. Interface is clunky and difficult to maneuver from square to square or clue to clue.

The puzzles are great. The interface still needs some work though. My biggest peeve is backspace not stopping at the beginning of a word. Why is there no setting for that? Or at least a clear word gesture. Intrusive ads also stink - unacceptable for an expensive app.

Checking a puzzle in the latest version is very slow. Takes at least one second for the UI to verify a clue.
